In the early hours of sun 3rd feb 08 my friend and i was driving down the caterham bypass and saw a young woman standing at the bottom of the staircase. I’ve heard stories about a ghostly lady is seen there but never actually believed it. it was about 1.30am, we believe she was wearing some sort of boots and maybe a skirt or dress with blonde hair. we thought that she couldn't be a ghost but was then trying to work out why anyone would be there by themselves at that time of the morning in clothes that were obviously not suitable for the weather condition as it was freezing outside!
My View:
I have heard reports of the ghost sitting on these stairs!

GHOSTSPOTTERS are being asked to come forward to help solve the riddle of the mysterious ghostly sightings in Caterham. Several motorists have contacted the Surrey Mirror to report seeing a young girl wandering across the Caterham bypass in the early hours of the morning. All of the drivers reported spotting the "ghostly figure" at about 3am. The girl is described as wearing a skirt and short boots or wellies. One reader said she had no features. David Willey, of the North Surrey Paranormal Group (NSPG), said he was very keen to investigate the sightings. He said: "Between Caterham, Godstone and old Oxted it's like a triangle really. They are on lay lines - like energy channels - and when towns or villages run through them, there's usually a lot of paranormal activity. "What we need now is times and dates of sightings.
Council worker Dennis Goodwin, operations manager responsible for the street cleaning team in Tandridge, claimed that his men had also witnessed the spooky figure. Every eight weeks they have to close off a section of the A22 while the road is cleaned. Mr Goodwin said: "On several occasions this ghost has been sighted coming from the steps in Tillingdown Lane, crossing the carriageway, climbing over the barrier and disappearing into the woods. "According to the lads who have seen her, she only crosses over the carriageway from the south side to the north side but she has never been seen coming back.
"On one occasion a driver was working outside his van and when he got into his vehicle he was positive there was someone sitting beside him. But when he looked, there was no-one there."

This testimonial comes from a good friend of my nephews called Ben and comes direct from an email he sent me.
Hi, at college today we were talking about ghosts and I think it was your nephew or something said that you had a website about the caterham ghost on the a22 and are gathering information on it.
Well me and my friend had heard about the ghost so we decided to go and do a ouija board there to see if we could contact the ghost thats supposed to haunt the road.
We parked in a layby along the bypass and asked if there was anybody there. After a while the glass moved to yes and when we asked who it was we were speaking to the board spelt out 'condensation'. We asked what it meant by this is said 'look behind'. We looked behind us and all the back of the car was covered in condensation all over the windows.
We asked if the person we were talking to had died on the road and she said 'yes.' We asked how she died and she said 'sex'. We asked her what she meant and she explained to us that she was raped and then killed by a boy called Tom. We asked how old she was when this happened and she said 15. We asked what year this happend and she said 1990.
We asked who Tom was and where he was now and she told us that she had killed him in 1993 by drowning him in a lake up the road from where we were. The glass was moving very fast by this point so we were obviously talking to a very strong spirit. We asked if she is the ghost who is seen by the stairs on the bypass and she said yes. We said we wanted to say goodbye to her but she kept sayin 'NO NO NO NO'. We asked her if there was anything else she had to say and she said that she had dropped her mothers ring on those stairs when she was running away from tom and she wanted us to find it. We said we would try and find it and then she said goodbye to us. We never went to look for the ring because we assumed that if she had dropped it in 1990 there was no way it would still be there.
The next day at college we were talking about it and before we had even mentioned the name 'Tom' someone mentioned that there was another ghost haunting the road called 'Tom'.
Anyway that's pretty much the whole story, hope it helps,
My View:
Well, seeing as i trust my nephew I’m pretty keen to find out more from Ben. He said that he want’s to go back and have another go and i will hopefully be going along to see it for myself. it’s a good story but some of the information needs further investigation.

Hi, I just wanted to email you as my boyfriend read something about a ghost on the Caterham bypass and it's spooked me a bit as myself and my boyfriend saw something similar last year. We were driving home to Croydon, and had passed the Caterham bypass. We were on the A22 but up by the Godstone Road part, it was very late at night, very dark, cold and no one around. We both suddenly saw a girl standing in the middle of the road (on the island), wearing what looked like a long white old-fashioned nightgown/dress of some sort. What was weird about it was that we didn't see her until we almost got to her, and it was freezing out yet she was wearing next to nothing, plus she was on her own in the middle of a dark street. She didn't look like she was about to cross the road, she was just standing there. We both commented on it and I looked back in the mirror and she'd just gone. Very odd. Couldn't see her walking up the street or anything. We both said how eerie it was and then didn't think about it again until my boyfriend saw something in the paper and showed me your site. Thought i'd let you know what we saw! It may be nothing and it was certainly a lot further down than other people have spotted someone.

My View:
There seems to be 2 different spirits being seen. One in 60’s clothes and the other in 18th/19th century night gown type clothing. Are there 2 ghosts? Is it the same ghost showing itself differently to different people?
